How to Tell if a Golf GPS App Has Accurate Data for Your Course
Before you trust a golf GPS app on the course, here's what actually determines accuracy, not just how many courses the app claims to cover.
Why "how many courses?" is the wrong first question
A lot of golf GPS apps lead with a big number: 40,000 courses, 47,000 courses, and so on. That number tells you the app has SOME data for a lot of places. It doesn't tell you whether the yardages on YOUR course are actually right. A course can be "in" an app and still have outdated tee boxes, a green that moved, or a fairway bunker that got filled in two years ago and never got updated in the data.
What actually makes course data trustworthy
A few things matter more than the total course count: How the course was mapped. Satellite and aerial mapping is generally more reliable than crowd-sourced pins dropped by other golfers, which can be off by 10-20 yards. How often it gets updated. Courses change: greens get rebuilt, bunkers get added or removed, tee boxes move. An app that hasn't refreshed a course's map in years will quietly drift from what's actually on the ground. Whether hole-by-hole yardages match reality when you're standing on the tee, not just whether the course name shows up in a search.
How to check before you rely on an app mid-round
Before you trust any golf GPS app for real yardages, do one quick check: pull up your home course and compare the app's front/center/back numbers on a hole you know well against a sprinkler head or 150-marker you can see with your own eyes. If the numbers are close, the app's data for that course is probably solid. If they're off by more than a few yards, that's worth knowing before you're standing over an approach shot trusting the wrong number.
